You must be Kidding, with all the very small posters and not much advertising you did'nt know about this great event I think your pulling our legs. Personally I think they should bring back the bank holiday Gala at least we new way in advance it was going to happen thank God for freedom of speech.

Well if your first post was meant to be sarcastic, sorry I missed it, perhaps you could add an LOL or a smileyConfused then we'd all know where you are coming from.  Although considering the position you take with regards to what is done in the village it would be very unlikely that anyone connected with the Cultural Festival would bother to let this site know.

Yes,  I'd agree the low key advertising was dissappointing and unfortunately due to another committment I wasn't able to go down to the event so don't  know how successful it was or otherwise.

Advertising events in the village is difficult, I should know Killamarsh Silver Band gives about 3 concerts a year, we put up posters, get articles in the Leader, The Derbyshire Times and The Star and the bulk of our ticket sales go to a mailing list I've put together. I'm sure there's a majority of people in this village that don't even know there is a brass band here and has been continually since 1886.  It's even visited many European Countries and played in the main centres of Brussels, Paris, Amsterdam and Prague as well as Germany and Italy. Not to mention playing tours in the Lake Disrict, Norfolk, Cornwall, The Cotswold and Northumberland.

Ok brass bands may not be "cool", it needs ability, talent and practise to be able to perform to an acceptable standard but we do get some kids off the streets.  Better to be doing something positive about a problem (or even an event LOL) rather than just complaining about it.

Actually my partner did try and do something by trying to start a boxing club and youth centre at the old Killamarsh Endowed School in 1994, this was blocked by the council who said the building was going to be a Computer Learning Centre  however this building was then sold on to a private investor for a house (wheres the sense in that)  as for keeping the kids off streets  I dont think joining a brass band is a long term solution.  Confused

Presummably the CLOC (Computer Learning Centre) that was purpose built on Stanley Street replaced their plans although I'm pretty sure that the "endowed" school belonged to the Church and it was them that sold it.  Dont we have a youth club down at the Sports Centre?

Agreed regarding the fact that a brass band isnt a long term solution to getting kids off the street but giving them something to do in the spare time just might. And catching them early can give a life time of not being on the streets – I took up the cornet at junior school and my music's kept me off the streets for quite some time now.

It was great to see 40 children turn up at our School concert last week all playing brass instruments and in the village there are currently 100 learning brass instruments – if just 10% of them carry on thats a group that won't have the time to be kicking their heels or causing trouble.

Actually it was the parish council meeting we attended regarding the Endowed School  not a church meeting, I wonder where Francis is getting his information from regarding moving the CLOC centre to Stanley Street as it was not public knowledge at that time.  Maybe joining a brass band is good for the 10% of 40 (making 4) but what about the 90% who this does not appeal to what are the council doing for these?  The saying "Nero fiddled while rome burned" comes to mind – its not all about brass bands  – talk about blowing your own trumpet methinks its all about me !!!!

What concerns me is one youth club, one over priced leisure centre and one brass band does not give the modern kids something to interest them.   Confused

Sorry I didnt go to that meeting and I did say I'd "assummed" that the CLOC was built instead – (I will also assume after plans fell through at the school) However I am reasonably confident that the building and land at the back belonged to the Church but it certainly wouldnt have belonged to the Parish Council.

I also said " Agreed regarding the fact that a brass band isnt a long term solution to getting kids off the street…" and it's not just 4 thats on top of the 12 we already have.  I was just trying to make a specific point in connection with a group I am connected with.

You are also being a little selective in your concerns, what about the Scouts, Killamarsh Kestrels (running), Killamarsh Dynamos (football), Dreams (amateur dramatics), JKR Karate Club, The Juniors Club?  Lots of groups in the village, non of which I am aware are provided by the Parish Council.

and by the way it not a "trumpet its a bloody tuba" (with a slight nod to Brassed Off) Laugh

It looks as though young Mr.Botham should be giving some of your local councilors tips on advertising, keep up the good work young man you'll go far!

Don't really miss Killamarsh that much but it's still good to keep looking at what people have to say.Good fun living and working in Snowdonia the weather as been glorious all season up to yet,if any one has a caravan and fancies visiting North Wales look up"BlaenCefn" caravan and camping park you'll be made most welcome.

Unfortunately the brass band (Killamarsh Silver Band) wont be taking part this year, we must have missed our invitation.  Since the inception of this event the band had attended everyone until last year (at no charge) its nice to see that the organisers can afford to hire other bands though.

Considering I usually know what most of the other local brass bands are doing I was pleased to see that some of my friends from City of Sheffield Brass Band have two bookings in the village in less than 2 weeks. Apparantly the more famous Dinnington Band had been booked to do the 40s night but they had to pull out (amazing what a bit of TV publicity can do).

Hey Joshua dont worry,  you don't need to apologise to the band and yes it is sad that we weren't involved.  But well done for taking part yourself and having the pride to be involved in a village event.

I hope you get the support you deserve or maybe you will come up against the apathy and snipping that that so often comes with "anything" that is done in or for the village

Good job  the band was'nt involved, Lead and balloon comes to mind what a shambles if you didnt walk past the leisure centre you wouldnt have noticed anything going on. The council have got all that land at the old highmoor pit site, plenty of room for parking and amenities could have a dog show like they used to even have the killamarsh strongest man again ( yes I am old enough to remember the first one)also could have a horse show plenty of horses in and around killamarsh it would'nt take much to get the land fettled and maybe people could get to know each other by all being in one big areaFrownFrown
