Bus shelters in killamarsh
The bus shelters in killamarsh look like something out of Beirut.What happened to the councils regeneration of killamarsh people have to stand under these and get wet. A number of years ago these shelters were hailed as vandal proof in the leader news paper and would save the people of killamarsh thousands in less maintanance the only way the council have saved money is dont maintain them please comment.
UPDATE; The council have now said there is going to be 4, yes FOUR new bus shelters built so please watch this space.
UPDATE ; 27/05/2009 We have had an email from the council and they state the bus shelters have been passed for being rebuilt ,what this means we dont know so we are investigating it .They said they had not got permission from the land owners but if the shelter is allready there why do they need permission we think it is slowing down tactics so they dont have to spend the money. comments please
UPDATE ; 19/06/2009 Thank you for all your emails we are pleased to say that work has started on the bus shelters, it just goes to show a little bit of persuasion can go a long way. We would like to thank Natascha Engel for keeping us informed and sending emails to the parish council and thank Paul Harding for his part in informing us. It may not be to everybodies liking but it will certainly tidy killamarsh up and make it look a little more presentable even if they are knocked down. It is no good looking at the new flower pots on the end of Kirkcroft lane which are quite nice, thencasting a sorry eye to the bus shelter on the other side. thanks again for the emails. I will enclose an email for you to read it is from the council:
Extract:I have just received an update from the Officer at Derbyshire County Council who is dealing with the order we have already issued to them for the 4 new Bus Shelters. Please see below for an explanation of the current position.
If you require any further information on this matter please let me know.
“In conjunction with Killamarsh Parish Council we are looking at four sites for replacement of existing shelters. The sites are:
Sheffield Road / Station Road (towards Halfway).
High Street / Canal Bridge (towards Killamarsh centre).
Upperthorpe, Cherry Tree Drive / Westfield Road (opposite the Bull & Badger).
High Moor, Mansfield Road (towards Killamarsh).
I have looked at each site with members of the Parish Council and agreed the type of shelter to be provided. Each site has also just been inspected by our Development Control and has received approval for the shelter requested.
I intend to arrange for the shelters, at all except the Bull & Badger site, to be ordered within the next 10 days (at which time the appropriate agreement documents will be sent to the Parish). The shelter at the Bull & Badger is problematic in that the stop is in a lay-by which will need some works to the highway in order to bring it up to standard (site visit awaited to discuss the requirements). As such the shelter will not be ordered for this site until we are clear what other works are required.
I will keep you informed of the progress on each of the sites”.
Regards
Paul Harding
Clerk to the Council
Killamarsh Parish Council
UPDATE: Here are a couple of photos of the Highmoor bus shelter which is looking really good. All clean and a pleasure to wait for a bus in.The council must now be commended on replacing the old shelters as they were an absolute eyesore. Keeping a village tidy is not easy but if people see tidyness it will generate a feeling of well being, that something is being done, and create more tidyness. I know we have the Idiot element but it may spur people on to report it more . Three cheers for the council and residents who complained. This Post is now resolved thank you for all your help.

I don’t know why they took down the old brick ones, at least they would still have been standing. All they needed was a clean out regularly.
What’s the point of renewing bus shelters, the local terrorists (youths)will only destroy them again, the only way this can be solved is to either knock them down altogether or as previously mentioned build brick ones. Failng these solutions, cameras are a costly alternative.
Thank you for your comments they are much appreciated the vandals are a terrible problem in killamarsh and the more that complain about it instead of putting up with it the more we can do thanks again.
True..they will only do it again..costing us the council tax payers even more…For how many buses pass through Killamarsh i really dont see the point….
@Newt
True the buses only pass through a bit more regularly than the tumbleweed, but one or two residents have pointed out the state there in they look like Beirut on a bad day so why not knock them down or refurbish them. When visitors or tourists come (God forbid) what they will see at first is two dirty great railway bridges that look like they should have gates on them, like in the film mighty joe young where it used to keep the gorrila in, and then the bus shelters which look like the begining of the terminator film where there is just skeletons of buildings and play grounds thanx for all your comments keep them coming.
You mentioned the bridges coming into Killamarsh I dread coming in that way as one day I’m sure someone will be sat on top of one swinging a banjo just like the film “Deliverance”
Yes did you also know killamarsh is twinned with Hokey Pokey in the deep south and they cook a mean crawfish pie, which we will soon be eating if we don’t do something now to stop the rot, this is Cletus signing off (HEY MA wered you put my banjo and greasy pig) talk to you later Johnboy.
Its not the bridges, but the footpaths coming into Killamarsh, they are just not wide enough…every time you walk into or out of Killamarsh i think your dicing wi death or a very serious accident…
ps..maybe i prob need to brush up on my spelling…
One upon a time it would have been the children of the folks using the bus doing the damage. These days it appears to be the children from the new estates causing all the nuisance, another age of latchkey kids.
@fatbloke_2000_uk
Sadly the council keep building houses and the public have to keep running the gauntlet.I am waiting for the day when My wife, children,grandchildren and I can walk down the street without fear of hoodies, terrorists, rapists,and all the rest attacking us and the atmosphere is’nt so thick that you don’t have to cut it with a knife.
@Manager
I already can – we must live in different parts of the village. I use the buses occasionally – apart from the one on Bridge Street why do the others need to be covered?
@fatbloke_2000_uk
Yes I think your part of killamarsh is called Harthill.
@Manager
Nope – i live on the Wimpey. Never had an issue with any of the youths on a personal level. They p@@@@ me off when they stand around drinking and leaving litter but i still feel comfortable walking up the jennels to the top supermarket with the grand kids.
How the hell as this “septic tank” got on here you’ll soon be advertising safestyle windows ( then I will delete the site )
It was Spam – It has been removed and we have installed Askimet to reduce similar comments, sorry, but thanks for commenting, it drew our attention to it!
Thats also where i live..altho i havnt had an issue i have sat in the car park of the s&s (after pushing my way through the crowd) and called the police because there was a gang of about 20 – 30 young people. Although it didnt bother me i think it may have bothered some old dear who may have wanted to use the shop.
Yeah the police did turn up asap and moved the gang on. But then again it was only about 6 in the evening.
@Newt
Thank you for your comment. This is very true the older end what we talk to in killamarsh try to let friends or family do the shopping, as most of them are very scared to go to the shops when gangs and the like are stood at the shop door. As you mentioned about the police we cannot understand why they don’t patrol at night this is the time they should be patrolling. We at rroka, you maybe the same,think they do’nt want to catch them because of the paperwork. Also we would like to know who is giving the leader magazine the stories about antisocial behaviour being drastically on the DECREASE when all we get at rroka are complaints and we get a lot what we don’t publish because of peoples wishes. Thanks for the comments.
Comments and Discussions surrounding this issue should now be placed within the Discussion Forum accessed from the link in the Report… Thank you!
Noticed last night that the one at the bottom of Station Road has been removed and hardcore is in place – signs of the new shelter?
Thanx for letting us know, did'nt realise they had started on that on that one

Anyone know why these new shelters are being paid for out of Parish tax? The two shelters on Sheffield Road and the one on Bridge Street all appear to be provided by the local bus company (First?) so why ain't they providing the new ones – it is their passengers that are using the bus. Driving into Sheffield all the new ones are supplied by First and when the glass gets shattered (which it does on a regular basis) they are the company that comes out and replaces it. They have a dedicated team to do this – do we think the Parish oddjob man will have the wherewith all to provide the same service in Killamarsh if it's the Parish Council that's going to provide them in the first place?
There has not been any glass in the bus shelters for 5 and a half years it was 'nt glass it was something unbreakable it said in the leader when they built them, I live near the last one that got smashed.
Perhaps this is what we need:
3M recently completed an amazing poster-stunt in Vancouver, Canada. They prepped a bus shelter ad with a 3M product called Scotchshield, a see-through film that you can apply to glass which makes it near bulletproof, and filled the postersite with lots of play money, and 500 real Canadian dollars for good measure.
After that they could just sit back and watch the mayhem…..
As passers by did their best to put the Scotchshield to the test, kicking the glass, taking sledgehammers to the glass and going all sorts of crazy over it, the glass withstood the pressures and did not budge. It did not break, it could not be broken. Shame one can't say the same about the aluminum frame which was breached, at that point security guards called a time-out as that was cheating. Canadian local and national news shows reported on all the crazy attempts to get into the poster for the cash, all in all 3M got a lot of press for their money – remember there was only 500 real dollars in there and a single poster site was rented for only one day
Thats a cracking story Francis, made me chuckle! Only in America!
Can I ask where in anything I have posted above that you consider I am not serious about what I have posted? Where also is the criticsm and sacrcasm you have referred to? The information regarding 3m came straight off their own website – I dont know whether that is the glass they have used or not – perhaps we will find out when it's found in a heap on the floor – then we'll know.
Also what do you expect the Parish Council to fund which “has a real cause for concern and could improve the way thousands of people live” – there annual net budget is £391,000 the bulk of which goes on the Sports Centre.
I had thought this thread was about the succesful conclusion of a RROKA campaign to get some new bus shelters perhaps I'm missing the point somewhere.
Oh, and I do live in the village.
Hi every one, like my grandad said hes glad that the new bus stop is up in highmoor but it is perfect to the last detail however we need one at the other end of the road when coming home from the Nethergreen club we have nearly been taken to woodall because
1) no bus stop
2) bus drivers are not trained well enough
thank you
The bus stops are a better quality we hope to be having another couple done in the not too distant future keep your comments coming thanks.
Shame about the bus shelter on the end of station road we thought it might happen, as anti social behaviour has not been tackled and the vandal culture is still out of hand pity for the residents who run the gauntlet most weekends now
See they are knocking the one down on cherry tree looks better allready not like beirut anymore.
